Clinical Biochemistry

Dr Michael P Metz brings to Clinpath Laboratories a wealth of knowledge and experience on patient care. He graduated at the College of Medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 1978. Following graduation he completed a long year of surgical training at the Charity Hospital of New Orleans. Dr Metz then completed a period as a GP in rural Louisiana before commencing further training in paediatrics at the University of Minnesota Hospitals, achieving the Diploma of The American Board Of Paediatrics. Dr Metz relocated to Adelaide in 1988 and continued his vocation in the old Queen Victoria Hospital, Adelaide Children’s Hospital, and Flinders Medical Centre. Dr Metz settled into the private practice of primary care and community paediatrics when he later returned to the United States. Dr Metz ran a practice in Boston which consulted at a long term children’s nursing home. His experience has also included administrative roles such as the Chief of Paediatrics at the community hospital. During Dr Metz’s career, he has also illustrated his interest in remote communities having worked in Haiti and St Lucia in the West Indies, Rabaul in Papua New Guinea, and Alaska, as well as in Montana in the USA. After 20 years of clinical work Dr Metz entered the field of clinical chemistry, training at the Institute of Medical and Veterinary Science, and Adelaide Women’s and Children’s Hospital where he is currently the Chemical Pathologist. This is where he developed an interest in the metabolic aspect of disease, solving patient’s medical problems with laboratory based clinical chemistry. Dr Michael Metz has spoken at international chemistry meetings, presented posters, and is published on a variety of topics. He is a past president of the state branch of the Association of Clinical Biochemists and is on the advisory committee at the University of South Australia for lab medicine curricula.
